Traits That Make An Excellent Football Player

Thursday, January 29th, 2009
Rick Grantham asked:

Playing football is the favorite pastime of a lot of Americans. A lot even dream of someday getting into the NFL and win consecutive Super Bowls. This is why even at the high school levels; the competition for football is quite fierce. So many athletes go on through life thinking what it would have been like if they had only been more talented, but guess what; it doesn’t matter if you are less talented than the other guy, it’s a matter of having the right qualities in you.

Before throwing your dreams of playing with the Indianapolis Colts aside, there are a few things that you should consider first. There are a number of qualities that great athletes such as Bret Favre, Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson, and Muhammad Ali all have. . Here are some of the traits that gave them the edge over other sportsmen.

Perseverance

In any part of life, there will always be obstacles that you will have to face. You must come out undeterred and go through these tough patches in your sporting career. It didn’t bother Bret Favre when he started out as a 7th string quarter back in college, being cut from his high school team didn’t stop Michael Jordan from being called the “Greatest”. There is a saying that goes “It doesn’t matter how many times you fall, it’s how many times you get back up”. Ok so you’re not the best passing quarter back; then work on it.
___________________________________________________________________
Focus

This is very important especially in a world with endless temptations. Have a game the following day? Maybe you could skip that party and rest instead of waking up with a very bad hang over. You have training but at the same time you have your only chance to date the girl you’ve been crushing on for so long? Skip the date and train. Once you start improving your game and begin shining, so many potential partners are bound to show up (probably even a big upgrade from the one you cancelled on).

Fearlessness

A lot of athletes are not able to shine because they become gripped with fear when they are given the chance to do so. So what if you dish out a bad pass? A lot of great quarter backs have had hundreds of mishaps. It’s a matter of just doing what you are supposed to when the right moment comes and not hesitate.

Have Goals

If you have a few things that you think you nee to work on, then you could plan and set goals for yourself. One effective way is to actually write them down. Start with a main goal, then from there; create a set of smaller goals that will work your way to that main goal. For example, if you feel that you’re endurance is lacking, you could start running and timing each run. If let’s say you can run 5k in 30 mns, then you could try doing 7k a month later, then add two again another month later. This way, you have constant success and you are taking baby steps towards your ultimate goal.

Football Handicapping | College and Professional Handicapping (nfl)

Thursday, January 29th, 2009
Roger Disantos asked:

Football Handicapping

Article Outline: One of the most popular events in the United States of America is the NFL Football League or NCAA College Football. Whether it’s a pro football game or a college football game, sports handicapping has become a common feature and an integral part of these games. This article lists some of the best tips to make loot out of football handicapping.

College and Professional handicapping (NFL):

Football is a popular sport in colleges as well as at the pro level. It’s in college that players learn the sport that assures them a passport to the national football league or the known as the NFL. Football in America came into the limelight, after a match between the Harvard University and McGill University at Montreal in 1874. At that time football handicapping was almost nonexistent. Since then football in America has caused many heartbreaks, but created some legends like Sammy Baugh (QB for Washington Redskins), Johnny Unitas (QB for Baltimore Colts), Bronko Nagurski (RB for Chicago bears), O.J. Simpson (RB for Buffalo Bills) and Gino Marchetti (DE for Dallas Texans).

Football over the years has won many hearts and has been a team game played with an interesting combination of power and strategy. As the game has climbed greater heights, football handicapping too has followed in its footsteps and is considered to be a common occurrence before and after every game. There are many key factors that create an advantage or a disadvantage in terms of sports handicapping in NFL. It all depends upon the picks made by a team, the players form, the defenders and the quarterbacks. Let us look at the key factors that are essential to football handicapping.

Football Handicapping Statistics: The first and the foremost is statistics. A team’s future performance can be judges based on the current statistics. When we say future, it means the next game in the league. Whether it is college football handicapping or pro football, you need to consider the statistics related to offense and defense put up by each team. Some of the details would include the total number of yards in each game, passing yards per game, rushing yards in each game, number of points scored, total number of yards allowed etc. All this needs to be considered in professional football handicapping. Another aspect that plays an important role is the strength of the team as it enters the league or the conference season.

Handicapping advantage:

There is a distinct advantage of playing on home field and this is not just valid for football or NFL but also for NBA, MLB and even the small inter college games. For example, in 2003, LSU destroyed Auburn completely by 31-7 and most of this was due to the home crowd advantage. In this game people had laid only 3 ½ points. A similar incident was where Florida State team traveled to Clemson. It was the hot favorite with 17 points but Florida lost in front of a Clemson home crowd of 86,000 voices. So you need to weight the home field advantage before jumping to a conclusion in football handicapping.

Football handicapping and Trends: Every team has its own story and in sports handicapping, you need to also focus on the trend followed by each team. This will lay open each team’s advantages, disadvantages, weaknesses and strengths. Whether it is a college football team or a pro football championship winner, trends, like some teams following a certain pattern in the dying minutes of the game, can prove useful and lead to effective football handicapping. Then there are trends followed by certain coaches who use a particular strategy with only a particular team like the strategy used by Colorado squad coached by Gary Barnett against Texas Tech Red Raiders.

These are the three key areas that will ensure that you are at an advantageous position during football handicapping.

Ncaa Football - Texas Wins Tostitos Bowl

Monday, January 26th, 2009
Audrey Nolan asked:

After losing the opportunity of going for the BCS Championship and the Big 12 title when they lost against Texas Tech two months ago at the last minute, the Longhorns are now celebrating their victory of last Monday, when they won the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona.

Texas had the No 1 ranking in the BSC Standings, but they lost it due to the defeat that they suffered against Texas Tech and later the Sooners finished as the Big 12 champions after they defeated Missouri for the title and earned a pass for the BCS National Championship.

In the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, Texas had to face Ohio State and they tried to prove everyone that they were a good team and a possible squad to win the championship.  And almost at the end of the game when everything seemed impossible and they were losing the game, Cosby caught a pass from quarter back Colt McCoy and run for 26 yards to convert a touchdown with only 16 left seconds in the clock, giving Texas a victory of 24-21 over the Buckeyes.

“We knew with the pride they’ve got and the tough games they’ve had in the BCS, they’d come in here and play tough and play great,” Texas coach Mack Brown said about Ohio State “There were two minutes and five seconds left and we had two timeouts,” He added. “For our offense, that’s a lot of time.”

Texas was leading almost the entire first half of the game, and they were leading by 11 points in the third quarter, but in the fourth, they allowed Ohio some touchdowns on consecutive possessions by making a lot of mistakes. On the other hand, the Ohio State’s defense was very good; actually, it was one if not the best defense that Texas has had to face this the entire season. Ohio State star that night was their quarterback Terrelle Pryor. During the game he had an excellent record in running and passing yards and he also converted a touchdown.

Even Coach Brown said afterwards that he does not doubt that in a certain moment freshman Terrell Pryor is going to lead Ohio State to a National Championship; nevertheless, the Longhorns already have a player of that caliber, and he is Colt McCoy, who completed 41-of-59 passes for 414 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the game, leading his team to the victory. He was named the Offensive Player of the Game due to his performance.

At the end of this game and with a final move, McCoy just planned with Cosby the last play to see what could happen and risked everything. McCoy told Cosby that the ball was going to him one last time since the defense had been giving him a hard time during the game and he wanted his receiver to challenge the opponent. Everybody thought, relying in the positive mentality of McCoy, things would go their way and they would get the victory, and that was exactly what happened at the end.  Coach Brown expressed that he was very proud of McCoy because he did the best that he could under the pressure that he was having, especially when he saved his team just when they were about to lose at the end of the game.

However, we have to mention that even with all his hard work, McCoy couldn’t win the Heisman Trophy this year despite he was the favorite for many. We hope that next season everything will go better for him and his Texas team since he could have a bright future ahead of him.

Nfl Pittsburgh Steelers

Sunday, January 25th, 2009
Natasha asked:

Pittsburgh Steelers was founded in 1933 by Art Rooney. It is a professional football team. It is included in the Central Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) of the National Football League (NFL). Under the realignment plan of the league which took affect in 2002, the Steelers play in the North Division of AFC.

It was named after the National League baseball team of Pittsburgh. In 1938 the star runner back, Byron White, who was nicknamed Whizzer owing to his speed, was signed by Rooney. But despite the new addition the team only managed two victories. Originally named the Pirates, the team was renamed owing to their losses in 1940. They managed only three record wins during 1942-1949.

Their uniform is black and gold colored. The team got its name from the Pittsburgh factories that are in Pittsburgh’s and where the team played its initial matches and moved to a new stadium in 2001. They were the first team to record four consecutive victories in Super Bowls in the 70’s. The team was headed by Coach Chuck Noll, and included several star players.

Their defense was nick named as the Steel Curtain owing to their powerful defense abilities. Some of the star players of that time included Jack Ham, Jack Lambert, Mel Blount, Donnie Shell and Joe Greene and White. They were members of the defense that was rated as the top for three straight seasons during 1974-1976. They won the 1974 and 1975 season’s playoffs and the Super Bowls in the following seasons. Three years later in an electrifying match against the Cowboys they won, 35-31 in the Super Bowl. The Steeler’s had a strong lead after Bradshaw’s four touchdown passes in the closing minutes of the match.

The Dallas quarterback made a few touchdowns before Pittsburghs recovered and marked a victory. They earned their fourth title ever in 1980 after they defeated Los Angeles Rams at a score of 31-19. It was a last Super Bowl appearance for the team under Noll, who led them to two more division titles in the 12 seasons that followed. He retired in 1991 with a career best of 209 victories, which put him in the fourth spot in the history of NFL.

After the sad demise of Art Rooney in 1988, who had owned the club for over 50 years, his son Daniel Rooney became the acting franchise president. At That time Bill Cowher, who was a former linebacker for NFL was appointed the head coach for the Pittsburgh in 1992. He made them a solid team in the early 1990s and led them to three consecutive division victories from 1994-1996. The Steelers played in the Super Bowl post 1995 against the Cowboys but lost 27-17. They emerged victorious in the1996 season playoffs in the AFC Central Division against opponents Indianapolis Colts at 42-14, but lost out to New England Patriots at 28-3 in the following game.
