Ncaa Football - Sam Bradford, New Ap Player of the Year

Friday, February 27th, 2009
Audrey Nolan asked:

___________________________________________________________________
The quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners, Sam Bradford was named player of the year by the Associated Press; the announcement was made on Monday after he was chosen. This is the third award he gets this year since he was already given the Davey O’Brien Award and the Heisman Trophy. For this award he was competing against Colt McCoy of Texas and Tim Tebow of Florida, the same players that competed with him for the Heisman Trophy. Bradford received 27 votes followed by McCoy with 17 and Tebow with 16.

Josh Heupel, the current quarterbacks coach and former Oklahoma player who won the same award back in 2000, expressed that Bradford deserved the award for all the effort that he has been doing even in the offseason. He also explained that Bradford has grown up a lot with this process of three years and that he has gain character to have a leadership roll in the team as a quarterback, their teammates actually believe in him and that’s what makes the difference.

The next objective for the team is fighting for the National Championship against the University of Florida in Miami. They are a very competitive team and have the same record that Oklahoma has for the season, 12-1.

“Playing in the national championship is something we’ve talked about all three years that I’ve been here, and we’ve yet to do that,” Bradford said. “So to have that opportunity … it’s really exciting. Me and my teammates are really ready to get down there.”

His teammates are very proud of him and they think he deserved the awards, especially because he is a great guy that still has his feet on the ground. They also consider that the awards he has received are for the team as well because the effort comes from all together.

Bradford has made a great effort as well this season. He got injured in the game against Oklahoma State when he tore his ligaments in the thumb of his left hand on November the 29th, but despite that, he played on the game against Missouri for the Big 12 title on December the 6th even though he was going to have surgery the next day.

This has been one of the best seasons for the Oklahoma team; they have scored 702 points in total, beating the record Hawaii’s set on 2006 of 656. They are also the first college team in 89 years to score 60 points in five consecutive games.

Bradford started his career with the Oklahoma Sooners in 2006, when he was fighting for the starter position of quarterback after Rhett Bomar was kicked out of the NCAA for violating the rules. He won the starting position for the 2007 season, where he demonstrated that he truly deserved the position since he had a very good season and the team won the Big 12 conference but lost the Fiesta Bowl against West Virginia on January the 2nd.

For this season Bradford has passed for 4,464 yards and 48 touchdowns, breaking the record that Jason White set in 2003 for the school. He is also leading the country in passing efficiency and has thrown only six interceptions.

College Football Betting, Nfl Betting or Both?

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009
Karol Lucan asked:

Size Matters: There are more than 120 college teams on the college football betting board while the NFL has just 32 teams. So, by pure mathematics alone, it’s about four times as difficult to keep up with college football as it is with the NFL.

Those large college numbers offer the bettor both risk and opportunity. For football bettors with the time, exploring the college football betting options may be the more rewarding choice. After all, in their rush to post wagering pointspreads, even the most experienced oddsmakers can’t get every line correct every week and occasionally misfire on a few games. That’s far more likely to happen at the collegiate level where, as the old adage goes, “bookmakers have to be right every time; bettors just once” gains added credence.

Getting to the Point(spread): You may live the rest of your life and not see Rice beat Texas in a college football game but no such stark mismatches exist in the NFL. In fact, even the Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts lost outright to Houston, Jacksonville and Tennessee last season, three teams that failed to make the playoffs. The largest pointspread differential in the NFL last year was 18, when the Colts welcomed the Titans to Indianapolis, Oct. 8. For the record, Indy prevailed, 14-13, but failed to cover.

The first 16 games of the 2007 NFL season opened with no team favored by more than seven points and a whopping nine contests where the line was a field goal or less.
___________________________________________________________________
Contrast that with the opening weekend of this year’s college season when no fewer than 16 games closed with pointspreads greater than 18, including two games above 30 and another pair of contests with lines of 40 points or more.

The larger numbers in the college football betting game also create greater volatility. For example, while top ranked USC opened as a 42 1/2-point favorite over Idaho, Sept. 1, gamblers pounded the Trojans, driving the line up to -49, a 6 1/2-point swing that you’ll never see happen in the NFL. USC failed to cover, winning, 38-10.

Also on Sept. 1, Michigan State was bet up from -17 to -23 against Alabama-Birmingham. The Spartans covered easily, 55-18.

This disparity in pointspreads creates a bit of a betting dilemma for bettors. The more conservative player may be better off concentrating on NFL betting, where no team is ever in a “can’t win” situation and the bettor isn’t apt to feel like a fool because a line has shifted significantly from the time it was posted to the time the player bet it.

The bettor with a more adventuresome streak may opt for college football betting where he could have, conceivably, laid 42 1/2 with USC and taken 49 with Idaho. He would have collected on both bets if the Trojans has won by 43-48 points. It didn’t work out this time but these highly desirable “middles,” where the shop-wise bettor gets both ends of a moving line, are available more often in the college game than its NFL counterpart.

The Known Versus the Unknown: With teams required to list injuries and the probability of players participating in each week’s game, there are fewer surprises in NFL betting. College teams, however, are under no obligation to post injuries and/or suspensions, adding another level of uncertainty to the NCAA wagering experience.

I Second That Emotion: Although division contests can stir the juices, for the most part, professional football players operate on an even emotional keel. Even NFL coaches’ halftime speeches tend to be more about Xs and Os than motivation.

But the college game, where impressionable teenagers dominate, is more influenced by emotion, witness a motivated Appalachian State, which scored an astonishing upset of overconfident Michigan, Sept. 1.

That’s just another factor that makes college football betting more difficult and more risky, but potentially more rewarding than the NFL.

When it comes to football betting, a player has to find his comfort zone.

Catch Football Fever With Nfl Tickets

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009
Al Terry asked:

Catch Football Fever With NFL Tickets

NFL tickets aren’t that easy to get nowadays. That’s because the NFL has more fans than ever and the game’s popularity has never been at this height. With the advent of virtual games like fantasy football and video games, the appeal of football tickets seems to have skyrocketed.

Facts And Figures

The National Football League or NFL was established in 1920 and currently consists of thirty-two teams, all of which are based in the United States. The league is further divided into conferences and divisions. Teams must go through conference and division wins to be eligible for the championships, known as the Super Bowl. Because sales of NFL tickets for the Super Bowl are so high, television has stepped in to provide coverage of the games. And as an example of how popular the Super Bowl is on TV, consider this- advertising spots for the Super Bowl are the most coveted and the most expensive.

Though baseball is often referred to as the National Pastime of America, it’s the NFL that draws the biggest crowds, bar none. Not only is it the most popular in the country, it also brings in the most crowds of any professional sports league in the entire world. Statistics show that each game draws around 67000 people.

NFL Folklore

One of the most fascinating aspects of the NFL is its brand of folklore that has been passed down over the years. While most of the incidents are passed down through the fans, sports writers and the media have also been responsible for a large amount of folklore. As a result, some accounts are very colorful while others seem to be completely mythical. The majority of them give a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of the game.

Football fans with NFL tickets way back in 1934 were witness to what is now called The Sneakers Game. During this game, the Bears played in basketball shoes for better traction on the frozen field. In 1958, the Colts and Giants took part in what is known as The Greatest Game Ever Played. 17 players of that game went on to enter the NFL Hall of Fame. During the late eighties, the NFL hosted the Bounty Bowls, which were two games which pitted the Cowboys against the Eagles. Both games were marked by fiery tempers and a number scuffles. The second Bounty Bowl was even worse because of rowdy fans that began throwing anything they could find, ranging from snowballs to batteries.

Fans that had NFL tickets in 1993 were treated to a game that has gone down in history as the greatest comeback ever in professional football. It happened during a game between the Oilers and the Bills in which the latter team stormed to victory even when they were 32 points down.

Today, watching an NFL game is an experience to be savored. A number of fans take the game very seriously, having special game traditions or costumes that they wear. You’ll probably see a few Hollywood celebrities in the stands too, cheering their favorite teams on. If you don’t feel like braving the crowds for game passes, then simply order them online. You can get in touch with an authorized online ticket vendor for NFL tickets.

Cerebral Celebrities

Jenny Sweeney asked:

Going back to school is as appealing as the scent of rotten banana peels, and, combined with the spring weather, studying for finals seems nearly impossible. But earning your degree is one of the most important and best decisions you can do now in order to secure your future. Just ask the A-list celebrities and athletes who’ve continued their education.

Many of Hollywood’s most athletic and most talented have prepared for the day when their playing/acting/singing careers end, and real life begins. Though some celebrities earned their degrees the traditional method—through attending university and college campuses, more and more celebs are opting for online distance learning courses as well.

Stars on the Field, in the Online Classroom

• Left-handed MLB pitcher, Al Leiter, knows more than just how to pitch a perfect game. In addition to being the only major leaguer to defeat all 30 teams, Leiter, a retired Marlin, also earned his associate’s degree through Penn State University’s World Campus program.

• What’s 7 feet tall, wears purple and appeared in 1994’s “Blue Chips”? You guessed it: Shaquille O’Neal. In addition to a NBA Championship, O’Neal also holds a bachelor’s degree from Lousianna State University. But the Shaq-Attack’s education doesn’t end there; O’Neal continued his education, earning an online MBA through University of Phoenix in 2005. Upon earning his MBA, O’Neal, A Miami Beach reserve officer, announced his desire to pursue a degree in criminal justice.

• Retired Phoenix Suns forward, Jalen Rose, is a paradigm athlete-scholar. Rose, who was recruited to the NBA from University of Michigan during his junior year of college, was determined to earn his degree. He enrolled in online classes from the University of Maryland University College (UMUC). There, Rose earned his Bachelor’s in Management Studies. Now retired, Rose continues to support education through the Jalen Rose Foundation, which offers five $10,000 scholarships to Michigan-area public school students each year.

• On the ice, she popularized the “I” spin position and wows crowds with her difficult jump sequences. As a competitive athletic and professional ice skater, Sasha Cohen understands the importance of nutrition, exercise, and a balance of the two. That’s why this young Olympic medalist is focusing on earning her undergraduate degree in Nutrition to Pennsylvania State University’s distance learning program.

• Former University of Nebraska football star and wide receiver Bobby Newcombe enrolled in an online master’s in business administration program through University of Phoenix. While enrolled in the online program, Newcome played for both the Indianapolis Colts as well as the Baltimore Ravens. After his two-year career in NFL, Newcombe returned to the education field. Currently, Newcombe serves as an enrollment manager for his alma mater, the University of Phoenix.

Beauty, Fame and Brains

• You’ve seen her in Lizzie Maguire, and your kid sister probably adores her line of clothing, Stuff by Duff. But what you probably don’t know is that Hillary Duff, Disney channel actress-turned-pop-singer-turned-entrepreneur, is currently pursuing her college education. Between recording pop hits, rehearsing for an upcoming film and designing products for her clothing line, Duff chooses from classes in liberal arts, computer science and management through Harvard’s Distance Extension program.

Celebrities on Campus

• He’s famous for his commitment to body building, and most frequently associated with the quote, “I’ll be back” but Mr. Olympia/actor/Governor of California also dedicated himself to his studies. Arnold Schwarzenegger earned a degree in International Fitness Marketing and Business Administration from University of Wisconsin.

• If the words Griffyndor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin and Ravenclaw mean anything to you, then you’ll know Harry Potter series author J.K. Rowling captivates audiences young and old with her imaginative writing. Before Rowling’s wizarding series developed, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in French from Exeter University.

• Oscar winner Jennifer Connolly has been in critically acclaimed films including Requiem for a Dream, A Beautiful Mind and, most recently, Blood Diamond. Connolly began her undergraduate studies at Yale, but later transferred to equally prestigious Stanford University where she earned her BA in English. Additionally, Connolly is fluent in both Italian and French.

• He’s most often playing opposite fellow actor, Rob Schneider in comedic films such as The Hot Chick, Big Daddy and The Waterboy. But actor Adam Sandler started and honed his comedic capabilities at his alma mater, New York University. While there, Sandler pursued his degree in Fine Arts, and regularly performed at local comedy clubs.

• Tommy Lee Jones is not only an Academy Award-winning actor, director and Broadway star, but he is also a *** laude graduate of Harvard’s class of 1969. While earning his degree in English, Jones played offensive tackle on Harvard’s undefeated football team and was hallmates with future Vice President Al Gore.

• Most famous for her stunning Barbie doll physique, The Girls Next Door star Bridget Marquardt is no dumb blonde. This Playboy Playmate graduated from CSU Sacramento with a B.A. in Communications, with a concentration in Public Relations. In 2001, Marquardt received her Master’s in Communications from University of Pacific in Stockton, CA. Arguably one of Hugh Hefner’s most educated girlfriends, Marquardt continued her education even further by enrolling in a graduate level broadcast communications program through UCLA’s Extension program.

Nfl Football Handicapping Trends

Thursday, February 19th, 2009
Michael Keneski asked:

When the Dallas Cowboys and Indianapolis Colts kicked off the NFL 2007 season with the preseason opener, handicappers around the country were getting their minds ready to attack yet another year of football games in the never-ending quest of making money and winning office pools. As a professional handicapper, it is my job to tackle the betting lines each week in a quest to provide winning information to those who seek my service. As a statistics major in college, I have combined the math side of the equation along with proven game trends that have allowed me and my partners to select winners at a 57 percent clip over 20 years. That doesn’t include our five weekly BEST BETS which come in winners at around 62-65 percent. This approach we also use for selecting college football, MLB, and NCAA basketball games.

Now on to our preseason NFL betting trends that we will share with you. One of my favorite betting angles that time and again have proven to be winners is the good old “Home Underdog” scenario. Typically seen when a struggling team plays at home against a winning club, the home underdog angle requires guts and fortitude by the better due to the fact that picking a clearly inferior team against one that is much better goes against every amateur bettor’s instincts. For example a typical home underdog the last few seasons was the Houston Texans who seem to struggle every season. Well last season the Texans were home underdogs to the Jacksonville Jaguars who were a playoff contending team. The point spread installed the Jags’ as 7 point favorites. Many probably saw this game as a gimme and bet heavily on the Jaguars. Well a 27-7 pasting by the Texans made Vegas very happy. This is the perfect type of scenario that betting lines thrive on and what you always have to be on the lookout for. Home underdogs are a great bet and have been a consistent winner for years.

The reason this is so is because of the disrespect factor. NFL players are if nothing else, prideful. Being disrespected is about the worst thing you can do to a professional football player and is something that stirs great emotions in those who feel its slight. When a team is playing in front of its home fans, the typical betting line is that the road team gets an automatic 3 points. Once this is established, then the oddsmakers determine the rest based on records, trends, injuries, etc. So after all of these factors are considered, if a team is then made into a home underdog, than what the oddsmakers are really saying is that you are so bad that we think you will get beaten on your own home turf. This drives players crazy and fuels them to prove the naysayers wrong. So what you get is a combustible level of rage, anger, and determination that allow home underdogs to cover at an almost 60 percent clip over the last five seasons. You are probably wondering that if this is so, than why doesn’t Vegas do something to change the pointspreads so that they don’t lose money on this trend? The answer to that is they don’t have to since many bettors still can’t resist betting on superior teams over inferior teams, no matter where the contest is taking place.

So your first lesson in the 2007 NFL betting season is that you should pay attention to home underdogs. They are good money makers and will help you get ahead in your office pools. Good luck.

Indianapolis Colts Unstoppable

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009
Chuck Berkley asked:

What made this game so interesting to watch, was the fact that the Pittsburgh Steelers are the type of team that scores big time on the 1st quarter, keeps it simple and safe on 2nd and 3rd, but comes back to settle the scores on the 4th.

I was putting my expectations on Pittsburgh, as that terrible interception just 3 minutes before conclusion left a bitter taste on the Colts front line and there was the fact as well that Indianapolis has been struggling 40 years in Steelers ground, so the stat favored my decision. As I learned from this game, the game is not over until the last second.

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning gave Roethlisberger a good reason to say “not over till the fat lady sings” when at the end, the coin tossed in favor of the Colts. The 240 yards Manning threw during game time, proved once more, that even a strong and wall-built team such as the Steelers is vulnerable to fall down under pressure. And what can we say about Manning, who in the past 3 games has achieved two TD passes-in on each; and although, many fans feel uncomfortable with Manning’s full-of-surprises style, this time it worked perfectly.

The strange situation here is the fact, that it’s becoming a Mannings tend to break the Steelers faith when they play in Pittsburgh; Eli did it last October the 26th at the end of the 4th, with a final score of 21-14 Giants favored and of course Peyton this past Sunday.

Everybody knew the game was over for the Steelers when reaching the end of the last quarter, those last seconds were telling a story for the team. In extreme anxiety Roethlisberger’s threw into the end zone sightless and was crushed by the defense; a very bad move because that interception went straight to Melvin Bullitts’ hands. The interception not only outplayed Roethlisberger to loose the game for his team, but it was his 3rd interception of the game… not looking to sweet for Roethlisberger at the moment, especially with the first two interceptions, which cost the squad 14 points in total.

Roethlisberger has 8 interceptions in 8 weeks, which in fact is not a bad stat for a QB, but making those errors during the final minutes of game time is definitely unforgivable.

Let’s look at some history and stats for a moment; in Pittsburgh the Colts are 2-12, making the last win for Indy back in 1968 and the first time after 12 attempts this 2008. The good news for the Steelers is that in the AFC this 2008, they are 5-1 on the board.

Now, the Manning-led team is happy and the Steelers are at practice reviewing the game video over and over again, perhaps wondering how come the 40 year nightmare could finally end for the Colts.

Betting Nfl Totals

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009
Ron Raymond asked:

How to Profit Betting NFL regular season totals:

By Ron Raymond of www.phoenixsports.com

When two teams go to the Super Bowl, the toughest challenge they face the following season is living up to the success of the past season. Expectations from playoff teams are always high at the beginning of a new season, mostly because of their recent success from the prior year, as their successful season is still fresh in the public’s mind. Therefore, these teams are viewed in a positive light and the bookmakers will inflate their season total wins.

Keeping that in mind, let’s review the past 11 NFL seasons and see how the Super Bowl winners and losers have done the following year. Since 1995, the Super Bowl winner made the playoffs the following year 8 out of 11 times for 72.7% with the average season total of wins being 11.75 games. However, it’s a different scenario for the Super Bowl loser, as they’ve only advanced 5 out of 11 times and those other 6 teams who didn’t make the playoffs, their average season wins the following year was 6.0 games.

Now, from a weekly ATS betting perspective and keeping in mind perception being the bookmaker’s friend, the betting public will always have “last week” syndrome when betting football. Most novice bettors tend to look back to the last weekend when doing their weekly picks and an experience handicapper will take last week’s results with a grain of salt and focus on the current situation at hand. In fact, when looking at those 22 teams who went to the Super Bowl from 1995 to 2006, the public’s perception has been that since they went to the Super Bowl last year, they should have a good season and cover the spread most weeks. However, as you can see from the chart below, only 6 teams out of 22 had a successful ATS season the following year with the OVER/UNDER edge going towards the UNDER.

In summary, if you look at the teams who’ve been successful the following season after going to the Super Bowl, you can clearly see those were teams of destiny with Hall of fame QB’s. Therefore, this brings us to the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears for the upcoming 2007 season. Manning is clearly a Hall of Fame QB and with the consistency the Indianapolis Colts have displayed in the past, it would be tough to bet the UNDER in their total season wins. However, my top recommendation for the 2007 season is to bet the UNDER on the total season wins for the Chicago Bears. The Bears relied heavily on their defense last season and were beneficiaries of a soft schedule in my opinion. But that won’t be the case this season; they will have a tough challenge right out of the gate, which could lead them to a 0-3 start.

Ron’s Pick: With that said, I look for the bears to have a 7-9 SU season in ’07 and would recommend betting the UNDER on their total season wins when the numbers come out.
