"quiet Strength" by Tony Dungy, a Personally Impacting Review

Friday, July 31st, 2009
Craig Mattice asked:

y’s book, “Quiet Strength,” was quite a surprising read for me. There wasn’t the detailed football intricacies that I had originally expected but did enjoy the way the points and information were presented. I could relate on every level, personal, Christian faith, novice football fan, and professional. A great read if your into biographies or personal development.

This is a personal story about Tony Dungy, the current National Football League head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. The story does not beat you to death with superfluous details yet it does begin early in his life. The book is sincerely written from the point of view to get the ideas and message across to the reader in an enjoyable, educational, and personal manner. I found the book easy to read, get involved in, and experience the feeling portrayed by Tony in expressing the events of his interesting life.

What did and did not surprise me about this book was the expression of Tony’s strong Christian faith and the impacting part God has played in his life from early on and through the present day. It was so interesting to read about his journey of many years in a short book that included Tony’s strong Christian faith, his sharing the message of Jesus Christ though many platforms and active participation. I was pleasantly surprised, rather enjoyed, and was personally impacted by his experiences.

I’m not as big a football fan as my wife. In fact many times I refer to myself as a NFL widower during the season. Well, now that we have the NFL channel this “season” is all year long. Currently we are into watching as many of the preseason games as possible. Imagine trying to watch 54 games in 26 days. Needless to say, my wife is in seventh heaven. Now to my point, I have learned a great deal about football from “Quiet Strength” although the book is not a “football” book by any means. What I mean is the book is not overwhelmingly about the intricacies of football and the business. Yes, you do get to see behind the scenes but again, it strictly deals with Tony Dungy and those people he has interacted with throughout his career. You will find that you will recognize either players or coaches, who have been and still are cureently in the profession. I found that kind of fun.

Having a full 301 pages in hardback and 16 pages of color pictures, Tony’s life and important people are captured with captions. I rather enjoyed seeing the people that he speaks of in the book. I felt it made me connect a little bit more and gave me a sense of personal attachment to him and his life.

I would like to share with you what really hit home for me in reading this book. First it was his strong personal Christian journey, then it was the behind the scenes look at the NFL and coaching, and finally I took away the statements that Tony had placed on the wall of the locker room in Tampa Bay. “Do what we do.” “Whatever it takes.” “No excuses, no explanations.Encompassing such a great meaning and impact, here we have so few simple words. In addition, I found a quote on a handout from Tony to his Tampa Bay Bucs team, just before a game with the Chicago Bears, to be very impacting on me personally. You’ll have to read it on pages 124 and 125. I’m sure it will have an impact on you if you are into personal development at all.

In summary, I would highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to have a very positive, motivating, and personally impacting experience. As I said earlier, the tid bits of golden nuggets gleaned from reading this book are both very personal and may have a strong impact on your thinking and life. I found I now have an even greater respect for Tony Dungy, the NFL, all coaches in the profession, and it was so cool to actually recognize many of the names of coaches and players even though I’m only a novice football fan. Read, enjoy the experience and have fun.

Eli Manning : 2004 Draft Day Picks

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009
Bob Johnson asked:

Eli Manning was born on January 3, 1981 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is the brother of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, and the son of former NFL player Archie Manning. With bloodlines like this it is no wonder that Manning is one of the best quarterbacks in the game today. Since an early age he has been around the game of football, and this is evident by the way that he plays the game on the field.

After a successful high school career Manning took his game to the University of Mississippi. During his college career Manning put up impressive numbers, to say the least. He finished his career with 10,119 passing yards, 81 touchdown passes, and a quarterback rating of over 137. While at Mississippi Manning tied or broke 47 season, single game, and career records. It is safe to say that Manning is probably the best quarterback that has ever come out of the University of Mississippi.

Going into the 2004 NFL Draft Manning was thought to be the number one prospect. But before Manning was ever drafted he was surrounded by controversy. The San Diego Chargers held the first pick in the draft, but Manning made it perfectly clear that he did not want to play for them. Despite this, the Chargers drafted Manning anyway. With the fourth pick the New York Giants selected Philip Rivers, and the two teams eventually swapped quarterbacks.

During his rookie season Manning started about half of the team’s games and despite performing poorly received some much needed on field experience.

In 2005, Manning led the Giants to the NFC East Championship, and a spot in the playoffs. Despite a solid regular season he struggled in a loss to the Carolina Panthers to cap off his second season.

During the 2006 Manning once again started off strong, but sputtered down the stretch. He ended the season with 3,244 yards and 24 touchdowns. But again he struggled with his accuracy only completing 57 percent of his passes, and throwing 18 interceptions.

There is no doubt in anybody’s mind that Manning’s game is going to continue to progress.

New England Patriots Tickets- Green-Ellis Causing Waves on Offense

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009
Julie Cudney asked:

It takes a special player to go from being cut before the regular season to starring on a team’s offense, but that is exactly what BenJarvus Green-Ellis has done with the New England Patriots this season. When the Patriots cut Green-Ellis during the last cut of the preseason, the choice seemed a logical one. The Patriots already had running backs Heath Evans, Laurence Maroney, Kevin Faulk, LaMont Jordan and Sammy Morris. The Patriots chose to pick him up again to their active roster before the fifth game of the season. Even then, though, it still seemed like Green-Ellis would be sitting the bench for some time. That was before Maroney had a season-ending injury, Jordan injured his calf and Morris hurt his knee.

Coincidentally, the man that the Patriots were unsure if they wanted on the roster has now become their primary ball carrier. Green-Ellis first took the field for week six’s game against the San Diego Chargers, but he only had one reception for nine yards. The next game against the Denver Broncos, he had 13 carries for 65 yards and a touchdown. He had another touchdown in week eight’s game against the St. Louis Rams as well as 16 yards on nine carries. He continued with his contributions during week nine against the Indianapolis Colts as he had 57 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown as well as one reception for eight yards. The Patriots’ game against the Buffalo Bills during week 10 was Green-Ellis’s best game yet with 25 carries, 105 yards and one touchdown.

Hardly anyone would be guessing this undrafted rookie would be making fans get out and buy New England Patriots tickets, which you can get at http://www.stubhub.com/new-england-patriots-tickets/. He was, however, a successful running back at both of the colleges he attended. He spent his first two years of college at Indiana University. His freshman year, 2003, he rushed for 938 yards and seven touchdowns on 225 carries. The next year, he had 794 yards and five touchdowns on 231 carries at Indiana. He switched to Mississippi in 2005 and redshirted that season. In 2006, he had 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns on 234 carries. His senior year, he had 1,137 yards and six touchdowns. He went undrafted in this year’s draft and the Patriots picked him up last May before cutting him.

As of week ten, the Patriots are 6-3. They have some tough opponents to end out the regular season as well as a couple that they should easily roll over. This season has truly tested the Patriots as they lost star quarterback Tom Brady during the first game of the season. Since then, the team has suffered some surprising losses like a 38-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins and a 30-10 loss to the Chargers. Tom Brady has reportedly been back in practice lately, meaning that the Patriots may have him back at 100 percent next season. Until then, they don’t seem to be faring too badly with backups like Green-Ellis and quarterback Matt Cassel.

Manning and Manning-Can Either Brother Win the Big One?

Monday, July 27th, 2009
Paul Mroczka asked:

It was just over a year ago, after the Colts lost to the Pats in their post-season contest, that Boomer Esiason said on national television, “I think maybe Peyton (Manning) is this generation’s Dan Marino.” Esiason went on to state that Manning “is a great football player, but he’s not going to get to the Super Bowl, I’m telling you, not with that defense.”

Marino, who was on the set, took umbrage at the reference and shot back, “Oh, wait a minute. I got to a Super Bowl.” Marino made a good point, but still, Esiason seemed to be on target by not blaming either quarterback for their failings but, rather, the guys on the other side of the ball-their weak defenses.

Fast forward to January 15, 2006, almost exactly a year to the date that Esiason made his comments. What was different this time for Peyton Manning and the Colts? The Colts seemed to have the full package-a great running and passing attack, a solid offensive line, and a fine defense. Everything was aligned for Manning-Mania to take full effect, especially after such a spectacular regular season.

But once again, under the glare of the national spotlight, in a huge playoff game, and under the kind of pressure he had rarely seen all season, Peyton Manning crumbled. This latest derailment of the Colt’s Super Bowl Express drew a barrage of disparaging comments from many writers and commentators, including the NY Times’ William C. Rhoden. Two days after the loss, Rhoden dubbed Manning “the king of statistics but the prince of NFL quarterbacks” in that although he can generate statistics, he may be incapable of closing the deal and ever bringing a championship to Indianapolis.

No matter how much you respect Peyton Manning and his amazing regular season performances, it’s difficult to argue with the facts. In eight seasons the Colt QB has led his team to the playoffs six times where he is 3-6. In those nine games he’s hit for 15 TDs, while throwing 8 INTs and being sacked 13 times. There are quarterbacks, most recently Tom Brady, who usually manage to rise to the occasion in the big game, ably dealing with a panoply of adversity. And then there are those like Manning, usually able to run like finely tuned, precision machines, which means when everything is copacetic they hum along but let something like a blitz throw off their rhythm and they breakdown.

Some people point out that maybe he has too much control over the offense, constantly changing and adjusting plays at the line of scrimmage, and when things go awry it’s almost impossible for Manning to adapt. Others claim that he simply can’t handle the pressure of a big game situation. Some blame others on the team. After losing to the Steelers this post-season, Peyton Manning did something he’s never done before; point the finger at his teammates.

Then there’s Peyton’s younger brother Eli, who just finished his second NFL season and his first professional post-season. Against the Carolina Panthers Eli Manning completed 10 of 18 passes, threw three interceptions, was sacked four times and lost one fumble as the Giants were humbled by their opponents 23 to zip. At one point in the game it seemed as if Eli Manning thought his job was to get the ball to the Panthers as boos echoed throughout Giants Stadium and fans hustled for the exits.

Coolness under pressure-is this a Manning characteristic? Or do Peyton and Eli share some sort of panic gene? For Eli it’s simply too early to tell and with Peyton, there’s still time left to turn the tide.

Perhaps one should ask, “What would dad and former NFL QB Archie Manning do?” There’s no answer to that question-in 15 NFL seasons Archie never came close to making it to the playoffs.

Time will tell what the true legacy of the Manning brothers will be. Dan Marino-Move over?

A Brief History of NFL Cheerleaders

Sunday, July 26th, 2009
David Court asked:

The history of NFL cheerleaders goes back to the 1960s when the Baltimore Colts (now the Indianapolis Colts) had formed their very own cheerleading squad. It was the first team to have an official cheerleading squad out of all the other NFL teams. A few other teams decided to have their own cheerleaders as well. NFL cheerleading was nothing like it is today but when the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders came around in their revealing outfits and dance routines, cheerleading became incredibly popular in sports entertainment.

The manager of the Dallas Cowboys knew that women could have an important role in promoting their team and their public image. He first tried to put some models out on the field for the audience. The models couldn’t survive the heat during the games and turned out to be a failure in terms of entertaining the sports fans. Determined to make his idea work, the Dallas Cowboys manager thought of a brand new concept at the time. This concept was to bring athletic dancers to perform choreographed routines on the sidelines. He held auditions where women were selected for their dance skills, looks, and style. The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders were formed and the squad took to the field their custom-made uniforms and dance routines. The sports fans loved this and the NFL cheerleaders skyrocketed with popularity at Super Bowl X where America’s millions of people sitting at home saw a glimpse of these newborn stars on television.

With their complex dance routines and pretty looks, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders created the new image of NFL cheerleaders. More NFL teams decided to take on a cheerleading squad of their own in order to increase their team’s exposure to the public and media. The latest NFL cheerleading squad to be formed was the “New York Flight Crew” (formed in 2007) who cheer for the New York Jets. With this spurt in popularity, the cheerleaders made guest appearances on television shows, paid events, charity events, and also overseas performances for the US military troops. The NFL cheerleaders contributed greatly to the public image of the NFL greatly as the media began to recognize their presence.

NFL cheerleaders were no longer just dancers on the field but also participated off the field to heighten the public image of the NFL teams. Though the stereotype of cheerleaders is that of a simple-minded, dancing girl, bear in mind that they are actually contributors to the community as well as sophisticated entertainers in the field of sports entertainment.

ELITE Pro Football Combines give hope to players who’ve been left out of NFL consideration

Friday, July 24th, 2009
Ted Altman asked:

ELITE Pro Football Combines give hope to players who’ve been left out of NFL consideration

Thar’s talent in them thar fields and it’s not all on display at the NFL draft. For the past twenty years one of the things that have been made clear is that there’s a lot of talent that won’t be picked by NFL scouts and GMs in the first go round. Just ask the likes of Adam Vinatieri, Joe Horn, Wayne Chrebet and Nick Harper how their NFL drafts went. Not good.

It’s a big country, so don’t blame the scouts. Fortunately, the safety net all those and 400+ more past and current NFL players fell into is the ELITE Pro Football Combines, a series of combines put on in May and June that gives passed over players the fortuitous chance to be seen by pro scouts. ELITE Combines has been diligently opening doors for football players who’ve fallen through the cracks. For a variety of reasons those hopefuls have been left out of the NFL combine and initial selection process. But for determined athletes who know they have what it takes, ELITE Combines has been there for them.

ELITE Combines will conduct eight combines plus three kicker-punter combines in major cities throughout the country. The very best athletes from those groups will be invited to the exclusive ELITE NATIONAL COMBINE in Indianapolis, IN at Lucas Oil Stadium on June 19-20. A bevy of NFL and CFL scouts will be on hand to view the goods. Anyone who thinks they have the mettle to make it to the next level can register on ELITE’s site, pay a fee, show up and display their God-given talents. There won’t be any fudging the scores as ELITE runs a tight ship. Standardized drills and tests that match the NFL requirements will be taken, with the results being entered into a data base on the ELITE Combines website where NFL and any other pro league scout or GM will be able to access it and decide if a player has what it takes. Videos and photos will be in there too. Every year a handful of ELITE Combine players make it to the next level. The drama is in not knowing who they will be.

ELITE Combines Executive Director Stephen Austin is considered the guardian for those who’ve not been able to travel the easier routes to the NFL. Many players were rehabbing injuries when their time came, and went. Many played at small schools not in the anointed big time college conferences. Some are just late bloomers. The male body continues to develop past age 23 or so when a player has used up his college eligibility. Most were revered stars on their college teams. Without an NFL development league players are left out of a development process. “ELITE Combines reopens the doors that were closed to these guys. The NFL tests the known best. We test the unknown rest,” says Austin.

Over the years, over 2,600 ELITE Combines players have made it to another level. The NFL, CFL, NFLE, Arena League… including at least five ELITE Combine alumni who are wearing Super Bowl rings right now.
