When I was in high school, I attended the only high school our town had. A one-high school town, our school was home to every 14-18 year old in residence. My senior year, there were about 250 of us graduating. I thought that was a lot; but I still at least knew everyone’s name, even if I wasn’t friends with them all. Looking back, our school wasn’t that big compared to some; the name of every person in my graduating class fit on the back of the Prom T-shirt! I never thought of my school as small; it seemed big to my small-town eyes. With approximately 1,000 students, our campus had 4 classroom wings (a 5th one was added in my junior year), a music building, a gym, library, office, cafeteria, weight room, tennis courts, football fields, and baseball diamonds. We even had a barn, for the FFA kids (Future Farmers of America) and their livestock. This was my world, and one which I quite honestly wanted to get out of as soon as possible. While the size of our school was really on the small side, it was big to us; but I guess it’s all relative to our own experiences.

These days (I only graduated about 15 years ago, thank you very much), Indianapolis Schools have grown. Even my old high school has grown so much that I barely recognize it. (It’s still the only high school in town!) In fact, high schools are huge! With enrollments at Indiana and Indianapolis Schools at low of around 1,200 students and as high as 2,000 or more, schools are full to bursting. Indianapolis Public Schools administrators, teachers, and even Indianapolis Schools parents are trying hard to improve the education given to high school students. And small schools, such as the ones present in Indianapolis Schools, are meeting this need.
In Indianapolis Schools, school systems are trying very hard to personalize their students’ education, through the use of “Small Schools”. A small school is typically located on a regular Indianapolis Schools campus and shares common areas with other small schools housed on the same location. Cafeteria, gymnasiums, and media centers are used by all students. One Indianapolis Schools campus may house up to four or even five different small schools. These Indianapolis Schools offer a more intimate learning environment that is better able to address the needs of students, staff and parents. Each of these smaller Indianapolis Schools has an enrollment of no more than 400 students. They all offer both core classes (English, math, social studies and science) as well as electives. The needs of all students – special education as well as general education – are addressed. The purpose of these small schools within Indianapolis Schools is to improve students’ academic, social and behavioral performance, to reduce the dropout rate, and to connect students in a more personal way with the Indianapolis Schools they are attending.

Indianapolis Schools that are using the small school models are showing some really good results. I guess my high school knew what it was doing after all.

The original V70 was a development of the Volvo 850 station wagon and sedan series. The new name reflected Volvo’s new strategy of naming vehicles depending on size and body style. Thus, the 850 was deemed to be a relative size 70. The name is then appended with the type of vehicle. So the station wagon adopted V (for Versatility), S (for Saloon) and C (for the new Coup); these cars are respectively known as V70, S70 and C70. There were 1,800 improved and new parts in the design from the original 850, including upgraded passive and active safety, better handling and new engines. Gone were the 850’s square edges and replaced by rounded corners to suit the late 90s style trend. Other changes included a new ‘family face’ for the V/S/C70 models, colour coded bumpers, clear indicator lenses, and a new dashboard fascia and materials. However on the whole, one could say the car was similar to its predecessor, but nevertheless, a successful facelift.

The current AFC West Division Champions of the NFL, the San Diego Chargers, defeated the Indianapolis Colts in overtime 23-17. This win was a surprise for the fans since the Chargers were struggling at the beginning of the season with a record of 4-8. However, the Chargers have found their winning ways and have steak together. Besides, his coach Norv Turner has also steak to the plan and has support his players even when things don’t go their way. That was shown in Saturday’s game especially in overtime, when Darren Sproles did a 22-yard touchdown that gave the Chargers the victory. 

During the game things were equally managed by the two teams; the Colts had the great presence of their superstar and MVP quarterback Peyton Manning, who had a solid performance by converting 25 of 42 for 310 yards with no interceptions and completing a touchdown. Their running back Joseph Addai was not clearly good as he only got 44 rushing yards on 16 carries. Team’s receiver Reggie Wayne for his part, after some absence in the first half, appeared in great way in the second half ending with 4 receptions for 129 yards. Wayne also converted a key touchdown of 72-yards to give the lead to the Colts at the beginning of the third quarter. 

On the other hand, the Chargers had great performances from their running back Darren Sproles, who substituted starting running back LaDainian Tomlinson and who gained 105 yards on the ground and 45 yards on five receptions in the game. This 5-6 ft running back also converted two touchdowns, one of 9-yards and the 22-yard winner touchdown in overtime. Sproles was a real headache for the Colts the whole game, and Indianapolis couldn’t find a way to stop him. Another key player for the Chargers was their punter Mike Scifres, who was really amazing by averaging 52.7 yards on 6 punts inside the 20, and also averaging a net of 51.7 yards. With this Scifres also broke a couple of post season’s records, the best net average and the 5 punts in a NFL playoff game that Green Bay’s Craig Hentrich set in 1998.

The effort of these players, along with that of their quarterback Philip Rivers, who controlled the Chargers’ offense, and the contribution of rest of their teammates, gave the team a positive result and the victory at the end. 

The coach of the Chargers, Norv Turner, was really pleased with his team’s effort and how they are finding their winning ways again. On the other hand, Colts’ coach Tony Dungy was really disappointed with his team, especially because they converted too many doubt penalties and didn’t convert some key plays. Dungy also expressed that Scifres was a key player for the Chargers. “He was the difference in the game,” recognized Colts coach Tony Dungy. “He just punted us in the hole all night long with long, high punts, stopping inside the 10-yard line.”

The next playoff game for the San Diego Chargers will be on Sunday January 11th against the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Heinz Field.

I’ve heard many “success experts” say you’ve got to have a certain type of personality to really find success. There’s nothing further from the truth. Yes, some personalities may be more advantageous than others. But you can find success regardless of your personality.

Take Tony Dungy, for instance. Many thought he would never win the Super Bowl because of his laid-back, even-tempered personality. He proved them wrong. What was it that made the Indianapolis Colts a success? Was it their high-priced salaries? No, the salary cap takes that out of the picture. It wasn’t a charismatic leader. And it wasn’t their desire to win (I guarantee Chicago wanted to win every bit as much as Indianapolis).

Everyone on the field wanted to score touchdowns. Everyone wanted to win. Everyone had the same goals. But victory came to the team that executed the best. Most experts agree that the rain in Miami made this past Super Bowl one of the sloppiest on record. But that doesn’t matter. One team executed better than the other. And that team won.

Execution is the ability to take what you know and understand, make a wise decision, and then put it into the corresponding action. Those who execute on a daily basis are the ones who have the greatest ability to succeed. Their personality may be more energetic, which is a good motivator for action. But that action isn’t always the right action. Sometimes the contemplative personality has a better chance to succeed because the action he takes is based on better knowledge.

After winning the Super Bowl, Tony Dungy made the point that success is determined by preparation. Preparation is what allows you to gain everything you need to execute properly. If you’re not prepared, you won’t execute well. You won’t pay attention to the details that are so crucial for success. And you won’t be able to see opportunities when they pop up. You might have heard that luck is a combination of preparation plus opportunity. Well, that’s not entirely true. There’s one missing ingredient in that equation — execution. You can be prepared and you can have opportunities. But if you don’t execute well, you’ll find nothing but bad luck (i.e., results).

So don’t let your personality hold you back. Look at your personality as a tool, not a barrier. Don’t let fear keep you from taking action. Prepare yourself (spiritually, physically, mentally, and emotionally) and execute well when the opportunities arise.
