Colts Are On The Defensive

Sunday, September 20th, 2009
William Bishop asked:

I’m really not sure what the Colts going to do this year. This pre-season they have not looked all that bad. Then again pre-season does not mean much only in the first quarter. It was pretty funny though watching their defense get torn apart.

It is interesting that the Colts can go and pay Dwight Freeney a huge amount of money, but start over with the rest of their defense. They’re going to have three new starters in their secondary but Tony Dungy is saying that no one should be worried because they play a cover 2 defense. I’m not sure what he is talking about considering you still have to have smart players and talented players playing in the cover 2. They have none of that. The best thing they have is Bob Sanders.

One of their biggest losses of the off-season will be Cato June. They really began to believe that he was only good because of the cover 2 defense they use. As bad as their defense looked without him at the linebacker position I would begin to worry. He was a good tackler with good speed and strength. Right now, they’re looking at replacements that have none of that.
___________________________________________________________________

Another loss they had by injury is McFarland. He will be sitting out the whole season to rehabilitate. He was one of the main reasons that the defense was able to begin to stop the run throughout the playoffs. If they would never have got him from Tampa Bay I’m not sure that they would have won the Super Bowl. Okay, actually I’m positive they would have not won the Super Bowl. The defense is actually why they won in the first place. Payson Manning continued to play at one of the lowest levels in playoff history.

The offense does look good like always which always makes you feel better if you are a Colts fan. I’m not so sure that they’re going to have as good as an offense though. Peyton Manning is assuring us that Joseph Adai will have a huge year at the running back position. Remember though that this came when he had Dominic Rhodes to take off some of the load. Plus Peyton Manning’s backside offense of linemen retired giving him a new linemen that is yet to be named. You will finally now have a new backside lineman for the first time in his career. As we all saw this preseason, Manning was getting nailed from the backside, no pun intended.

For all the Colts fans I’m sorry to say that I would be worried for this upcoming season. You’d better really hope that Bob Sanders does not get injured as he will be the only reason that the defense is anything this year. If you are a fantasy player I would not go for the Colts defense, but that is just common sense.

2009 Indianapolis Colts Fantasy Football Preview

Saturday, September 19th, 2009
Chris Limburg asked:

The year 2008 was kind of a down year for the Indianapolis Colts.  For the 6th time in his career Peyton Manning was one and done in the playoffs losing 23-17 to the San Diego Chargers in the Wildcard round.   Moreover, last year was somewhat of an off year for Manning statistically despite winning his 3rd league MVP award and I witnessed firsthand what it is like to have a QB that is trying to shake the rust off after having off season knee injury.  Manning heated up later in the year but unfortunately many owners did not have the supporting cast that I had to hold the fort down and thus missed out on the post season party.  In fact my Manning experience of last year has soured me on Tom Brady this year.  You just cannot afford to play without a QB for the first 4 or 5 games of the season and that is what I endured last year.  Furthermore, Brady’s injury is said to be far more serious than Manning’s was a year ago.  The Colts will once again be good but will they make the playoffs?  I am not so sure as Tennessee is already solid and both Jacksonville and Houston are primed to be far better this upcoming season.  But again this is fantasy so I will focus my energy on the Colts position players and what they offer up in terms of fantasy potential in 2009.

As mentioned Manning did not have one of his best statistical outings of his career but he did enough to secure his 3rd league MVP award.  I lived and died with Manning for the first 6-7 weeks before he finally started to heat up down the stretch.  The Colts are heading into a major transformation this year as Head Coach Tony Dungy has retired and has been replaced by Jim Caldwell and 2 other prominent members of their staff as offensive coordinator Tom Moore and offensive line coach Howard Mudd are expected to retire due to changes in the NFL’s pension policies.  Moore would be a huge loss for Manning as he represents the only offensive coordinator that he has worked with in the NFL.  Nonetheless, despite all of the turmoil in the coaching staff and the departure of Marvin Harrison look for Manning to continue his assault on the NFL’s passing records.  Why?  For starters, Manning is just that good and he still has most of his weapons at his disposal including Reggie Wayne, Anthony Gonzalez, and Dallas Clark.  Furthermore, another major variable in Manning’s favor this year is that center Jeff Saturday will be healthy.  Ahhh I know what you are saying.  “What could a center possibly have to with fantasy performance”?  TONS!!!!!  I watched most of the Colts games last year and it was painfully obvious that the whole offensive line was completely out of sink without Saturday’s presence and this lead to a lack of continuity and rhythm from the whole offense.  The Colts will not have it easy this year.  The AFC South is markedly improved than in previous years.  You know Tennessee is solid but Jags and the Texans both look to be much improved this year and the Texans in particular are specifically addressing their defense year in and year out in an all out effort to stop Manning and the Colts.  Expect Manning this year to post his usual numbers in 2009 of about 4000-4500 yds passing and about 30-35 TD’s.  Look for Manning to be either the 2nd or 3rd QB taken this summer behind Drew Brees somewhere in the middle of round 2.

Joseph Addai is a complete joke.  I have thought Addai has been overrated since his inception into the NFL in 2006 and now I pretty much think he just plain *****.  The Colts were obviously hoping that Addai would be the next Edgerrin James but has not even come close to living up to that standard.  For starters, he is injury prone and it seems like he truly doesn’t want to play with pain.  Furthermore, Addai also vanishes from far too many games for my liking leaving Dominic Rhodes (who has since departed to Buffalo) to do the dirty work.  If you remember that is exactly what went down in the Super Bowl against the Bears a few years ago.  Rhodes was clearly the main back n that game and I think it is funny because this year someone inevitably will draft Addai high simply because he is a RB.  WHY?????? Again, read my article “Draft RB’s Early?  Buyer Beware” to gain some insight as to why that is NOT a good idea.  Apparently, I am not the only one not sold on Joseph as the Colts used their first round selection on the stud RB Donald Brown out of Connecticut. Brown will immediately step in and at least split carries with Addai if not more and to be quite frank I look for him to be the much more polished back by the end of the year.  Personally, I think Addai is no more than a number 3 back or a Flex option for 2009 but you can mark my words he will be gone in most drafts no later than the early 3rd round.  I could be wrong but I doubt it.  As for Brown, keep an eye on him in the middle rounds and don’t be scared to take a chance on him this year.  Why??? Well, let me just say Chris Johnson, Matt Forte, and Steve Slaton.  Nuff said.
___________________________________________________________________
Obviously, all the Colts receivers are solid fantasy options.  Wayne, is a surefire number 1 WR and is a model of consistency much in the same manner Harrison was for so many years.  Although, Wayne is solid I would caution not to select him ahead of the following receivers:  Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson, Andre Johnson, or Randy Moss.  That is the crème of the crop in terms of NFL receivers these days but if you go a different route on draft day and get some RB’s early you may be looking at the likes of Wayne, Steve Smith, Greg Jennings, or Marques Colston as your number 1 WR.  I’m not saying that there is anything wrong with that but don’t expect Wayne to be a Fitz or Megatron in terms of his big play ability.

Watch out for Gonzalez this year.  The former Ohio State product is heading into his 3rd NFL season which is historically when many receivers break out.  Add to the equation that Harrison is gone and you realize that ‘09 could be Gonzo’s year.  I look for Gonzalez to break the 1000 yard plateau this year for the first time and to pop it in the end zone 8-10 times.  Those numbers would make him a nice number 2 fantasy wide out though on draft day don’t give him that much respect. Not yet.  A year from now may be completely different as we may be talking about Gonzalez in the stud capacity.  For now, treat Gonzo as a number 3 WR with plenty of upside and expect him to go around the mid-way point of most drafts this summer probably around the 7th-8th round.  The Colts also drafted WR Austin Collie out of BYU in the 4th round of this year’s draft.  Keep an eye on Collie as he essentially fills the role Gonzalez did a couple years ago when he first broke into the league.

Dallas Clark presently remains one of the elite TE’s in the NFL along with Jason Witten, Antonio Gates, and Tony Gonzalez.  Not much to say here about Clark.  A surefire number 1 fantasy option that will continue to catch all kinds of passes from Manning and well worth the 5th-6th round pick it will take to secure his services this fall.

Adam Vinatieri is a number 1 fantasy kicker based on his reputation, he plays in a dome, and the Colts score a lot of points.  That is pretty much my equation for kickers and the ALWAYS represent my final pick in drafts.  The Colts DST is intriguing because of Bob Sanders, and Dwight Freeney and can be used in a pinch depending upon the match up.  However, in terms of nabbing a week in and week out DST there are far better options at this point than the Colts.  Next up: The Houston Texans

The Importance Of Being A Leader In Sports

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009
Martin Chase asked:

During my NFL career, I learned that leadership is a trait that all athletes have deep inside of them. Unfortunately, I found that most players do not know how to apply their leadership skills. It is the inability to apply leadership that sets the regular NFL players apart from the true greats such as LaDainian Tomlinson, Marvin Harrison, Peyton Manning, and Brett Favre. These fine players are all strong leaders. It is their powerful leadership skills that inspire their teammates to come together as a team and play at the best of their ability - even when they are losing.

Sports leaders are able not only to lead people in the right direction but to also give them confidence. A leader makes his teammates believe deep in their hearts that if you follow me, we will win. This requires a lot of responsibility and charisma on the part of the leader, but it’s also what separates good players from the Hall of Fame players.

As a young athlete, if you want to make it first to college sports and then to professional sports, you must develop your leadership skills. It is the strength of your leadership skills that will help separate you from the competition. College and Pro teams want leaders. Leaders win games.

As a young athlete, if you want to someday make it to the pros, you must work on developing your leadership skills everyday. You need to learn how to motivate people and make them believe in you. To build your leadership skills, here are some tasks you should do.

1. Be on-time for your classes at school and work hard to get good grades. This shows your teachers that you are eager to learn and to work hard. It also shows your coaches that you are eager to learn and work hard. So, always show respect for your teachers and coaches and they in-turn will show respect for you. This is the first step for becoming a leader. You must show others that they can trust and respect you.

2. Be a leader in everything you do. At school, help your classmates learn. Lead them to going to class on-time and working hard to get good grades. Help your community. And, help your teammates improve their skills on and off the field. The sooner you take the role of being a leader who makes smart decisions, the sooner people will see that you are a leader and they will follow you. Also, when people who have power see that you are a strong leader, they will give you special opportunities that other people and players will not get.

3. Show leadership by example in your sport. Work at learning your skills and the strategies of the game harder than anybody else on your team. One trait the true sports leaders all have in common is they are always the first to arrive at the sports facility in the morning and the last to leave at night. They become the best players and the strongest leaders by working twice as hard as everybody else. If you choose to work twice as hard as everybody else, you will receive deep respect from both your teammates and from your coaches. And, you will become a master of your sport.

4. Being a leader is even more important during the bad times than the good times. A true leader remains confident and motives his team members even when they are losing. It is during bad times that a leader’s true colors will shine and he will do everything he can to help his team be confident and driven to win.

Finally, understand that leadership is not something that is given to you. Leadership is something that you give to others.

Super Bowl Sparks Interests in Gm Cars

Monday, September 14th, 2009
Anthony Fontanelle asked:

Advertisements are crucial marketing ploys and they can make or break a product’s reputation. When it comes to airing and broadcasting ads over the television, there is no better time to do so than during the Super Bowl.

For as long as we can remember, Super Bowl ads are part of the event as much as the game is. Ads aired during the said event costs a lot of money and this is for good reasons. The major sporting event draws a huge number of viewers that are interested not only in the game but are also anticipating what ad a certain company will air during commercial breaks. One commercial spot during the said event can cost companies as much as $2.6 million.

But the cost is worth it for some companies. Take for example the largest car manufacturer, GM. The automotive giant aired their ad campaign last year for their then newly launched Cadillac Escalade. The effect of the ad campaign was felt the Monday following the game where searches in AutoTrader.com for the Escalade increased by 18 percent more than the previous Monday before the game.

This so called Super Bowl phenomenon for the Escalade was observed by the leading auto classifieds marketplace on the web in 2006. And that was not to be the last time that a Super Bowl ad for a GM vehicle has increased the popularity of that particular unit.

Viewers tuned during this year’s Super Bowl witnessed the airing of yet another ad for a vehicle from General Motors. Aside from this, people have also been able to view an ad for one of the company’s marques. The company launched their “Car Wash Dudes” ad campaign for the Chevrolet HHR during the Super Bowl that saw the Indianapolis Colts battle the Chicago Bears for the prestigious title.

Another ad from the largest car manufacturer in the world is the “Everybody Loves a Chevy” spot which focused on their Chevrolet brand. The effect of the ads on the popularity of the GM car was felt immediately on Monday. AutoTrader.com once again saw an increase in the number of searches for the Chevrolet HHR.

Shawn Tucker, manager of content for AutoTrader.com has this to say about the effect of the ads shown during the Super Bowl on the popularity of certain vehicles: “It’s been said baseball is America’s pastime, but football is America’s passion. We’re also passionate about cars. It’s not surprising to see amplified interest for specific vehicles advertised during the Super Bowl given the record numbers of viewers and the anticipation of the ads shown during the game.” Indeed, any company can take advantage of the Super Bowl phenomenon if they can afford the cost of a spot during the game. Other vehicles that have taken advantage of the Super Bowl to spark interest in them are two Honda vehicles - the Honda CR-V which shows a 4.4 percent increase in the number of searches for it on AutoTrader.com and the Honda Ridgeline with a 2.2 percent spike.

The sporting event held for the 41st time since its inception has been known not only for the game but for the ads shown during the breaks. Different companies offering a wide variety of products are taking advantage of the huge number of viewers tuned during the game to advertise their goods. Without a doubt the Super Bowl is a great help for companies to sell their goods and make these products be popular with the public. In fact, it is as helpful as an EBC brake pad is helpful to a driver during emergencies.

The Super Bowl was held last Sunday and for the first time, it experienced rain during the game. The result, by the way, is a victory for the Indianapolis Colts, 29-17.

LORENZO

Peyton Manning – Indianapolis Colts

Monday, September 14th, 2009
Cindy Ferguson asked:

We’ve done comparisons to Dan Marino and Tom Brady the past weeks, we’ve praised their efforts in and out of the field and while analyzing them, we have also mentioned Peyton Manning in a 2-3 brief sentence; so now, let’s focus on Peyton Manning.

Again, we will try to concentrate on Peyton Manning only, so pardon us if by chance we mention someone else on the way.

Our beloved Manning has been to 7 Pro Bowls, including 6 straight from 2002 to 2007, he owns two MVP awards in 03-04, and he also has many awards and honors that could fill several NFL history books. Now, how much does this matter for us writers and you fans? Are we wondering what he had done to deserve such luck?

For years, Peyton had tried without success to win the game, the big game! Tom Brady had already won three Super Bowls, wounding Manning and the Colts multiple times in the process. After years of getting to the postseason, but disappointing, many started to wonder if Manning would ever once finish what Brady had done 3 times already.

In our stat book, he broke the mark for passing touchdowns, passer rating and consecutive games with at least four touchdown passes in a single season in 2004, but none of that seemed to matter to those in most NFL limits (in particular fans)…until he lifted the Lombardi Trophy.

In the early months of 2007, Peyton Manning led the Colts to Super Bowl XLI vs. the Chicago Bears. During the game, Chicago’s Devin Hester returned the early kickoff 92 yards into the touchdown zone; Manning without delay, threw an interception on the Colts’ opening offensive series. For those who witnessed that play and the game, on the sidelines, it appeared that fear started to grasp the quarterback’s shoulder pads. For those who know the game, this play has always been avoided on any type of division football, especially pro.

So, for sports fans, article writers and critics, Manning was missing yet another break for prominence. Why does Manning always suffocate in big situations? Was he going to blow his chance like all the years before, was this a plan or strategy?

As soon as he threw the pick, Manning saw his mistake and immediately responded with a touchdown pass to Reggie Wayne after Chicago’s secondary lost the receiver in coverage. The game seemed close through on both sides and the final score could have been much inferior, but again Manning put in a brilliant 25 of 38 for 247 yards, two touchdown passer performance in the Colts’ 29-17 victory. Manning was named MVP for the game, but even better was the overseen Super Bowl curse he got off his back.

The big and deserved smile could not be better and after such a long time of being battered by the critics, the Patriots and even fans, Peyton Manning was at last a Super Bowl champion.

They say you can loose a single battle, but nobody can take the honor away and for Peyton Manning, going into combat for the 08-09 campaign, he will be aiming up this time and things will look achievable, from a positive point of view.
