The Power of Manning

Friday, October 16th, 2009
David Wygant asked:

Cut that meat! Hey Bill - You’re my favorite accountant! Whoa Jim, throw some dirt on that! Nice arm! (As the paperboy flings the paper right through the window)

Who would have thought that, we would be talking about Peyton Manning’s younger maligned brother Eli? Look at Peyton Manning… commercial star, Super Bowl winner, and one of the NFL’s greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game.

So how do Peyton and Eli Manning relate to dating? Have you ever gone out with a friend who is so good with women that you become intimidated even to open your mouth? Then when you do open your mouth you feel that what you’re about to say could potentially be the wrong thing… so you say nothing.

You don’t say a word.

When Eli Manning came out of college at Ole Miss, he was known only as ‘Peyton Manning’s little brother.’ The pressure to succeed was unbelievable!

Not only that, he was in New York City by virtue of being traded for extra draft picks.

His first few years in the league, he was ridiculed. Every night on ESPN there was talk about how we would NEVER be as good as his brother.

Every throw was broken down. Every interception was analyzed.

Tiki Barber called Eli Manning out, saying that he would never be a winner and that the team would never win with him playing quarterback. His coach almost got fired… and had that occurred, Tom Coughlin would never have had the frostbite he had at the end of the Green Bay game.

In light of all of this, what did Eli do? Did he quit? Did he let people get to him? No… he kept going.

He learned to manage his game.

Think about this for a second. A lot of guys think that meeting a woman is a game. There’s even a book out there called “Rules Of The Game.”

Here is what I say about “Rules Of The Game.” There are no rules… and there is no game! It’s about being true to yourself and staying on course.

Eli never quit . . . ever. He kept going and going and going. He decided that he was going to ignore all the critics, and that he would become the best quarterback he could be.

He’ll never be his brother, but when this Super Bowl is over two Mannings will have gone to the Super Bowl. Win or lose, not many quarterbacks can say they have played in a Super Bowl.

So when you’re going out to meet women, stop comparing yourself to the Peyton Mannings of the dating world. Keep practicing. If you throw an interception (which in the dating world would mean getting rejected), keep flirting and keep talking.

I guarantee that if you work on your gamesmanship, you’ll get to the Super Bowl of dating… fast! You may not be there today, but look at everyone who has perfected skills.

They have been through lots of time invested, frustration, lots of hard work and self-criticism.

Does any of this sound familiar in terms of how you feel when you approach women? Do you feel like Eli Manning at times?

If so, then it’s time to look to your own inner Eli Manning. Isn’t it time you stayed on course, and kept working on your skills every day? Yes, this is another David Wygant / Vince Lombardi speech.

Football season is almost over. I am not a basketball fan, as you can tell from yesterday’s newsletter where I referenced passing up floor seats to be with a woman.

Personally I would rather hang out with a woman than go to a basketball game. Baseball is very slow, and it doesn’t fit the newsletter very well.

Football is very “rah rah,” though, so I have at least one more Vince Lombardi / Newt Rockney speech in me. That speech will of course come out around Super Bowl time.

In the meantime, you have two weeks before the Super Bowl to go out and tap into your inner Eli… and to enjoy the ride and the journey.

Jacksonville Falls to the Perfect Patriots

Another victim has fallen once again to the Patriots after Jacksonville loses 31-20 in Foxboro. Tom Brady was almost perfect in this game going 26-of-28 for 262 yards and 3 touchdowns. He started off the game going 16 for 16, a single game postseason record, to break Phil Simms record for completion percentage in a game. Brady stayed very calm throughout the game and calmly took what the soft Jacksonville cover game him. The Jaguars where unable to pressure Brady into any interceptions as they pretty much stayed with their base front four rushing him in passing situations.

Jacksonville was so worried about giving up the big play to Randy Moss that they kept their safeties deep all game leaving the short routes wide open for Brady to hit eight different receivers and have an almost perfect passing percentage. Jack Del Rio never adjusted his defense all game long and ended up paying the price for it. Even though Jacksonville was in this game throughout, you never got the sense that they could get a lead on the Patriots.

New England played error free football with no interceptions, no fumbles and winning the time of possession. Jacksonville on the other hand ended up with two turnovers both coming from David Garrard whom threw one and fumbled one. The only way Jacksonville was winning this game was if they two played error free and found a way to use their running game to keep New England off the field.

The league’s second-most productive duo during the regular season combined for just 66 yards. It ended up being the Patriots whom dominated the running game as Laurence Maroney rushed for 122 yards, including a 1 yard touchdown. The Patriots game played out in almost identical fashion as the Green Bay- Seattle game that played before. Green Bay dominated the running game as well as the time of possession while the Seahawks only got 20 yards on the ground from their star running back. In both games the underdog team forgot the run very early in the game which ended up being the downfall of them. Once the run was left behind it gave the opposing defenses the advantage by allowing them to drop more people into coverage.

Norv Tuner will have to learn from the mistakes that Jacksonville made if he’s going to have a shot next weekend. LaDanian Tomlinson and quarterback Phillip Rivers where both injured during Sunday’s contest against the Indianapolis Colts. It will be very interesting to see how Norv Turner game plans for the Patriots if these two starts cant’s compete. The only way San Diego will have a chance against the Patriots is if they can stick to the running game throughout the contest. New England going into the Jacksonville game was allowing 4.4 yards on the ground and most of those yards where right up the gut of New England’s line.

The Patriots failed to cover the -13.5 point spread against the Jags, but the total did just go over 49 by posting a combined total of 51. New England has had trouble covering these big spreads especially in the second half of the season. This should be a big heads-up for handicappers when it comes time for their bout against the San Diego Chargers. Their’s plenty of football left to be played and it will be a test for the Patriots next week as they host the Chargers. Lets see if Tom Brady and the New England Patriots can continue to play error free football and stay down the path to a perfect season.
