The largest American football league – the National Football League (NFL) – consists of 32 teams from all over the United States. It is one of the four major professional sports leagues in North America – the others being the Major League Baseball (MLB), National Basketball Association (NBA), and the National Hockey League (NHL).

The NFL is divided into two conferences – the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC), which are further divided into four divisions each, each division consisting of four teams. Each of these divisions is designated as East West, North, and South.

American football, played under NFL, descended from Rugby football played in England, and reached the United States via Canada in 1874. Professional football dates back to 1892 when William ‘Pudge’ Heffelfinger was paid $500 by the Allegheny Athletic Association to take part in a game, on November 12, against Pittsburgh Athletic Club. This makes him the first professional player on record. Professional football spread over the next few decades.

The American Professional Football Association, the predecessor of the NFL, was founded in 1920, and changed to its current name in 1922.

The NFL Season
___________________________________________________________________
Prior to the regular season, which is generally from September to December, or early January, the NFL season features a four game preseason, or exhibition season, running from early August to early September. This is followed by a 16 game 17-week regular season. Following the regular season, starting in January, six teams each from the AFL and the NFL play a single elimination tournament – the NFL playoffs.

The playoffs end with the Super Bowl – the NFL Championship. The top team from each of the two leagues – the AFL and the NFL – plays in the Super Bowl. The day incidentally is considered an unofficial American national holiday! The Super Bowl was usually played the Sunday following the playoffs, but of late, it has been held on the first Sunday of February, every year.

The Super Bowl is the most watched sport on American television, with companies spending millions on commercials. The game is held for the Sunday night prime time audience on the East Coast. The winner of the Super Bowl in February is crowned the champion of the previous year. The Indianapolis Colts - who won the Super Bowl XLI in February 2007, are the champions of the 2006 season.

Football Tickets

The games of the NFL being so popular with a large fan following, the NFL tickets are hot property. Whether you are looking to purchase the NFL tickets for the pre-season, regular season, or for the playoffs, they are not easy to lay your hands on.

NFL tickets for the Super Bowl would be a near impossibility – so much is the interest it generates. NFL tickets for most of the games are sold out the moment they come on sale.

Legitimate ticket brokers have the wherewithal to arrange your NFL tickets for you. As a word of caution: you should buy your NFL tickets from legitimate ticket brokers that are members of the National Association of Ticket Brokers (NATB) who ensure you tickets of your choice.

The organization organized its first championship event on a national basis in 1921. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is a general lawmaking and managerial organization in the field of intercollegiate athletics. It plans and implements the rules and regulations for a variety of sports along with the eligibility norm for athletes. The association enjoys tremendous popularity and has a dedicated fan following.

NCAA administers intercollegiate athletic contests at both regional as well as national level. Throughout the year, it is known to conduct around eighty national championships involving more than twenty sports. The organization is known to collect statistics in the field of college football, baseball, and basketball. It also publishes rules and regulations and guidebooks on sports such as fencing, gymnastics, lacrosse, ice hockey, soccer, skiing, swimming, track-and-field, and wrestling.

In the year 1973, the NCAA was restructured into three divisions. Each division represented a diverse level of competition. All the three division held national level championships in an assortment of sports. The organization’s membership includes more than eight hundred educational institutes. The membership is on the upswing.

In the recent past NCAA made an announcement that the committee responsible for drawing up the rules for college basketball has decided to move the back a foot to twenty feet, nine inches. This change would be implemented in the season of 2008-2009. This change in the rule has a huge influence on the overall game. As a result of the change in the rule, some feel that the game will involve less physicalities since there will be more distance between the post and the perimeter. The extension of the line will result in pushing the defenders far out on the floor to do away with open threes by the challenger.

NCAA tickets are hot property. It is very difficult for you to get hold of them by yourself. But you need not worry. You can always take help of a ticket broker. The competent staff of a ticket broker is always there to help you in any way they can. The organization is known for its reliability, durability and competence. You just have to give a call and the NCAA tickets will be there at your home. You will not even have to move out of the house for procuring your NCAA tickets. Great Tips for Procuring your New York Jets Tickets

Saturday, February 7th, 2009
Al Terry asked:

New York Jets Tickets

The New York Jets play in the Eastern Division of the American Football Conference in the National Football League (NFL), and play their home games at the Giants Stadium, which is also home to the other professional football team of New York – the New York Giants. The Jets, however, prefer calling their base The Meadowlands, as the stadium bears the name of their rival NFL team. The Giants Stadium is located in the Meadowlands Sports Complex, a massive complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

At present, the New York Jets train on Long Island, at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. Their new training facility as well as their corporate headquarters is coming up at Florham Park, New Jersey.

The Team History

The Jets were originally named the New York Titans, and started as charter member of the American Football League (AFL), in 1960. Sony Werblin, head of Music Corporation of America (MCA), who along with Leon Hess was part of a group that bought the team in 1963, renamed it the New York Jets. After the AFL-NFL merger, the Jets joined the NFL.

The New York Jets caused one of the biggest upsets in American sports history on January 12, 1969. Playing as underdogs in the third AFL-NFL World Championship Game - but the first to officially bear the name Super Bowl – they defeated the NFL champions, the Baltimore Colts, 16-7, at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida.

As Titans, the Jets played their home games at New York’s Polo Grounds up to 1963. Werblin and Hess decided to relocate to the Shea Stadium, and the New York Jets made their home there for 20 seasons, from 1964 to 1983. During this time, the Stadium hosted three playoff games involving the Jets: the 1968 AFL Championship – beating the Oakland Raiders, 27-23; a 1969 AFL Divisional playoff – losing 13-6 to the Kansas City Chiefs; and the 1981 AFC Wild Card Playoff – losing 31-27 to the Buffalo Bills.

From 1984 onwards, the New York Jets are based at the Giants Stadium. The Jets will be moving to their new home – the New Meadowlands Stadium, which is expected to come up by 2010.

Today, the New York Jets is owned by Robert Wood Johnson IV, heir of Johnson & Johnson, who bought the team from the estate of Leon Hess, who had earlier bought out his partners.

The Jets have retired three jersey numbers to honor their great players. These are:

#12 - Joe Namath

#13 - Don Maynard

#73 - Joe Kleck
